Health Sense with Jeri

My name is Jeri. I live in the beautiful ocean town of Fort Bragg, California. I am 44 years old, have been married for 26 years and have two beautiful adult children. I am studying to be a Nutritional Consultant through the Natural Healing College.

My journey into making sense out of my health started 7 years ago, when I read the book “Natural Cures They Don’t Want You To Know About.” Since then, I’ve read over 150 books on the subject of natural health. The day I finished that first book, I changed my and my family’s diet from 100% conventional food, AKA the Standard American Diet (SAD diet) to a 100% organic one. I didn’t know what to expect at all, I just knew it would do us good to not have all of those toxins in our bodies.

What convinced me this change was effective was the drastic difference for me during my monthly cycle. I used to have cramps that would keep me bedridden for at least a day, and during that week, I would go through a bottle of Advil in order to try to ease the pain. After only 2 months of this new diet – NO cramps! I haven’t had any since then. For me, this was a miracle and prompted me to keep learning all I could about TRUE health and nutrition.

I knew then it was my purpose in life to try to teach others what I had learned, to help in any way I could to make people truly healthy and, most importantly, to prevent disease. If I can help just one person, and that person helps one person, and so on…I have done my job.

Jeri on: Spirulina and Chlorella (June 2012)

My superfood of choice.

If I were deserted on an island somewhere, there are two things I would want to have with me: Spirulina and Chlorella. They are both considered to be some of the most nutrient dense (my favorite word) foods on earth. You could, quite literally, live on them alone. No, it’s not as fun as pizza, but we’re talking survival here!

I take between 40-50 tablets a day of a 50/50 blend that contains them both. Now, before you run off, thinking I’m a crazy person, you have to know that these are a whole food – similar to eating an apple, not similar to popping a bunch of synthetic pills or vitamins.

I do, however have to share them with my kitty. She comes running from out of nowhere whenever she hears the bag open. And to my surprise, they have healed a runny eye that she has had ever since we got her. It is now 100 percent.

So, let’s take them one at a time…

  • Spirulina is a blue-green algae, a “superfood” if you will. It contains omega 3 fatty acids and is a rich source of B6 and folic acid. It also has something called antioxidant phytonutrient anthycyanins which is known for its powerful anti-carcinogenic properties. Meaning, it help to prevent cancer.
Spirulina is rich in chloropohyll and contains about ten times the amount of chlorophyll in green vegetables per volume. Chlorophyll helps build red blood cells in the body and provides an easily absorbable form of magnesium, something most people are lacking these days.

So, you might ask, “That’s great, but we’re on a deserted island. Where will I get my protein?”

Simple. You get it from Chlorella.

  • Chlorella has 58 grams of protein per 100 grams of weight ! Compare that to beef and chicken, which only have 24-25 grams for the same amount of weight.
I use them both in combination to keep my immune system super strong. I haven’t been sick once in 7 years. Together, spirulina and chlorella are the perfect whole food and a complete protein.

I do not, nor have I ever sold any brand of spirulina/chlorella. But I have done a lot of research to find the best quality for myself and I have found that the best comes from the Watershed Wellness Center at It is what Kitty and I take every single day, and I hope you too, will add it to your daily routine.       •

Jeri on: Toxins (May 2012)

If I were to ask you, “Do you know that there is poison sprayed on and injected into the foods you eat?” your answer would probably be, “Yes.” Everyone knows this, right? We see the planes flying over the fields of strawberries, and the disgusting slaughterhouses where cattle and chickens wallow around in their own feces. We all know about this, but do we all know what these poisons do once they get inside of our bodies? I have to tell you, prior to seven years ago, I had NO idea. I was oblivious. I just figured that they were killing the “bad” bugs, keeping us safe and protecting us… Boy was I naive.

These toxins wreak havoc inside of our bodies. Our bodies have no idea how to metabolize these toxins so it usually ends up just storing them inside of our fat cells. And not only are there toxins in our food, but there are toxins in our makeup, our shampoo, our lotions, our sunscreens, the cleaning products that we use in our home, the heavenly scented spray we use to make our houses smell wonderful, and the perfumes we spray on to make ourselves smell wonderful. We are, quite literally, bombarded with hundreds of toxins every day, but the good news is, we have the power to rid ourselves of most of them.

Did you know that anything we put on our skin is absorbed directly into our bloodstream? And unlike the food we eat, it is not filtered by our liver. So, beginning from the day we’re born until now, just think of all of the carcinogenic (cancer causing) chemicals that have been rubbed on, sprayed on, and lathered into our bloodstream (assuming that you are using conventional products). There is a cumulative effect as these chemicals add up and up and up, and, eventually, our bodies can’t fight it anymore and “suddenly” we are diagnosed with cancer or some other disease. This surprises us, and we wonder why this happened all of a sudden?

Well, it didn’t. It took a lifetime of toxins building up in our system until our bodies just can’t fight it anymore, our immune systems weaken and we have disease. I know that sounds far too simple, but it is true. Go take a look at your bottle of shampoo (a product that most people use every single day) , then I want you to put the ingredients into the cosmetic database ( and it will let you know how carcinogenic, on a scale from 1 to 10 those ingredients are.

Do this for everything in your home that you put on your skin. You will be amazed when you realize what you’ve been doing to yourself all these years. I know I sure was! The good news is, there are so many nontoxic alternatives to practically everything these days, and yes, they are a little more expensive, but certainly not as expensive as it will be when you’ve come down with a disease that requires hundreds of thousands of dollars to treat (conventionally). It is 100 times easier to prevent something than to cure it.

Don’t be discouraged and don’t be overwhelmed. Just take it one step at a time, one product at a time. Do what you can. But once you are aware, I am sure you will be eager to be on your way to building a healthy, nontoxic version of yourself.

Jeri on: Heart Disease (April 2012)

Let’s talk about heart disease. The first thing you thought of when you read that was most likely “cholesterol.” But, tell me, doesn’t it seem kind of strange that something that our bodies are designed to make naturally would harm us? Our bodies’ number one job is to live, that is all. So, why would our livers produce cholesterol and why would every cell in our bodies NEED cholesterol to thrive? Did you know that if we don’t get enough cholesterol in our diets that our liver will just make more in order to compensate for the lack of it?

We’ve all been lied to. All these years. And for one reason only. Money. Statin drugs are the number one selling drug the pharmaceutical companies have. So, we need to un-learn the lie that cholesterol causes heart disease because it just is not true.

So, what does cause heart disease?

Inflammation, caused by all of the sugar in our diets. Take a look at the foods you eat in a day. How much of it has sugar in it? Most likely, all of it. And I’m not talking about candy. I’m talking about regular food. Pasta, bread, crackers, all of these turn into sugar in our bodies, and as far as our body is concerned, it’s the same as eating a candy bar.

In the book “The Cure for Heart Disease, the Cure Will Save a Nation” Dr. Dwight Lundell (cardiologist) states that out of the thousands of heart surgeries he has done, very few of his patients had high cholesterol.

People are so concerned with the fat in their diets, believing that “fat makes you fat.” It is the sugar that makes you fat and it destroys your heart.

I think, that deep in our hearts we know that it is the sugar, but we don’t want to believe it because it is just so darn yummy. It is highly addictive and if it were to be discovered today you would need a prescription to get it.

So, if you really think about it, doesn’t it make more sense that rather than a substance our bodies make naturally (cholesterol) that it is the sugar that is the cause of all of our problems? The cure for heart disease is simple. Stop eating sugar.

Jeri on: Soy (March 2012)

To eat soy, or not to eat soy… That is the question.

I could not be happier that more and more people these days are looking for healthy alternatives to unhealthy foods. It’s a start, to be sure, but it can be confusing.

What I’ve found, with others and even with myself, is that when people switch to a diet that is plant based, or hear that conventional milk is filled with antibiotics, steroids, and pus (yes, I said pus), they tend to switch to tofu and soy milk. Why not? It’s from a plant, right? The problem is, it’s a toxic plant, and unless it is organic and fermented, you can be sure it is genetically modified.

GMO’s (Genetically Modified Organisms) are everywhere these days. That is the biggest problem I see, but there are others.

Because of the phytoestrogens that are found in soy, the damage it does, especially to infants, who often are fed soy in their baby formula, is something we should all be aware of. I have read that feeding babies soy formula is the same as giving them birth control pills! Girls these days are showing signs of puberty much earlier these days, as early as eight years old, because of soy. It is a hormone disruptor and has also been shown to promote breast cancer in women.

As with everything these days though, there are always alternatives. Organic Fermented soy is actually good for you. Miso and tempeh are fermented soy products that you can enjoy without having to worry about GMO’s.

As far as soy milk goes, there are alternatives to that also. Almond, rice, hemp, oat and even good old fashioned organic cow milk or goat milk, is all delicious and good for you.

So, it just depends on your taste, and how far you want to step outside the box. I know it can be confusing and sometimes frustrating, but the best thing to do is to research everything and then do what you feel is best for you and your family.
